7/7/2005 7:30 AM: Terrorist attack in London

GibbsUSA.net smilie: grim I am not a religious person. I do not condone or believe in any specific theology- but prefer science.

That said, I find it hard to comprehend how anyone, in the name of any religion can approve of the mass killing of innocent people going about their daily lives. While the London attack brings this home to me and my family, even in Iraq these so called people are happy to kill their own! GibbsUSA.net smilie: confused

I hope and pray that the British resolve that got us through the German bombings in WWII and the Irish terrorism in the 1980’s and 90’s etc. stands firm and makes us a stronger nation. GibbsUSA.net smilie: sad

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those injured and killed in today’s atrocity!

Thank you for your comment. While I do not want to turn this into a political debate or ideological dispute, the Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd ed. defines concentration camp as:

a camp where non-combatants of a district are accommodated, such as those instituted by Lord Kitchener during the South African war of 1899-1902; one for the internment of political prisoners, foreign nationals, etc., esp. as organized by the Nazi regime in Germany before and during the war of 1939-45

Until Nazi Germany set up camps whose main objective was to kill prisoners, and called them concentration camps to conceal their true purpose, the term was used relatively literally to mean simply a camp where a group of prisoners was concentrated, although conditions may have been less than ideal. Since then, no government or organization has set up camps by that name. What used to be called concentration camps were later called by a succession of euphemisms, new terms being invented as existing ones become an embarrassment: internment camps, resettlement camps, new villages, strategic hamlets, etc.

Once again, I reiterate: I find it hard to comprehend how anyone, in the name of any religion can approve of the mass killing of innocent people going about their daily lives- whether it be Muslim, Catholic, Christian, Protestant, Jewish etc., etc.
